PLENARY „RECTORS” SESSION
Strategies for success – „Road maps” towards research university
The announcement of the results of the first competition in the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” (IDUB) opened a new era of the higher education in Poland. Jaroslaw Gowin, Deputy Prime Minster speaking at the Royal Castle in Warsaw on 30th October suggested that the universities that won the competition should share their development plans with the academic community. The session with the rectors of the “winning ten” universities will provide a good opportunity to discuss those institutions “road maps”.

PLENARY SESSION II
An international perspective – global trends and transformation of Poland’s universities
Higher education finds itself under pressure from global changes and challenges. In these times of uncertainty there is no universal university model. For this, it is necessary to constantly analyze and compare internationally solutions adopted elsewhere. At the session two experts, from Denmark and Canada will take a look at the Polish higher education from an international perspective. They both know it well, Lauritz B. Holm-Nielsen served as the chair of the international team that made the selection in the competition for research universities, and Alex Usher participated in the ranking audit of a few of our institutions.

Poland’s universities in the international rankings’ perspective
To be ranked in the Shanghai Ranking for a university represents recognition of its quality and quality of the research, but at the same time the Shanghai Ranking has been criticized for its methodology that leads to the “seesaw” effect when it comes to the results. The presentation by Lu Wang, Ranking Manager ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, will help better understand the works of this ranking. Prof. Tomasz Szapiro will present interesting conclusions of his analysis of several rankings from the point of Polish universities.

Masterclass: Poland’s universities in international rankings
Rankings help institutions to position themselves internationally, choose proper partner institutions for cooperation, and to monitor implementation of reforms. This, however, requires solid knowledge of the strong and weak sides of each ranking. At the session various inside aspects of international rankings and rankings by subject will be presented with accent on the position of Polish universities. The master class will be conducted by Prof. Richard Holmes, renown ranking expert whose opinion is respected in the world.

Managing the ranking area at a university – „good practice”, problems, recommendations
Academic rankings have become a steady element of the higher education landscape, but on the university level not always exist management procedures that place the ranking aspects in a proper place in the university structures hierarchy. At the session, people directly responsible for the rankings at their universities will present solutions that proven to be successful in universities participating at the „International Visibility Project”.
